Moataz Motawaa has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of "onebank." The move is backed by Banque Misr as the main shareholder of the entity, which is the first digital bank to receive an official operating license from the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE). Motawaa's selection to lead the new bank follows banker Sherif El-Beheiry and comes after the bank officially secured its final license last week. This milestone was reached upon fulfilling all regulatory and technical requirements governing the operation of digital banks in the Egyptian market.

The Central Bank of Egypt has issued Decision No. 106 of 2026 approving the granting of a license to onebank (onebank S.A.E.) to operate as a digital bank in Egypt, according to the official publication.

In a landmark move for Egypt’s banking sector, the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) has granted approval for Misr Digital Innovation (MDI) to transform into “onebank”, Egypt’s first fully digital native bank, designed to serve customers by offering financial services exclusively through digital channels and platforms.

The Central Bank of Egypt “CBE” has granted Misr Digital Innovation “MDI” preliminary approval to launch the first digital bank. MDI unveiled the name of the digital bank, "onebank," for the first time. Confirming in a press statement that onebank is the first digital bank in Egypt to secure preliminary approval from the CBE. This signifies the completion of the initial phase, involving a due diligence of the infrastructure, banking systems, and cybersecurity protocols to ensure their capacity and capabilities to provide stable and secure services to the customers.

Banque Misr subsidiary Misr Digital Innovation (MDI) on Thursday submitted an official application for a digital banking license to the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE), becoming the first local company to do so, it said in a statement Thursday. The company expects to launch the digital bank “within months” should it receive approval from the central bank, it said. We expect it to go live sometime in early 2024.
